A professor of philosophy has used a probability formula to weigh evidence for and against Jesus Christ's Resurrection — and says the probability of the Resurrection comes out to be a whopping 97 per cent!
An article in The New York Times of May 11, 2002, written by Emily Eakin, reviewed a conference on ethics and belief at Yale University in April, 2002.
Eakin said Richard Swinburne, a Greek Orthodox professor of philosophy from Oxford University, used a probability formula known as Bayes's theorem to assign values to factors like the probability that there is a God, the nature of Jesus' behavior during his lifetime, and the quality of witness testimony after his death.
God overrides natural laws
“For someone dead for 36 hours to come to life again is, according to the laws of nature, extremely improbable,” Professor Swinburne said. “But if there is a God of the traditional kind, natural laws only operate because He makes them operate.”
Swinburne gave his notes and calculations to the audience so they could follow while he did the math.
“Given e and k, h is true if and only if c is true,” he said. “The probability of h given e and k is .97”.
In plain English, Professor Swinburne's calculations allegedly show that the probability that the Resurrection really happened is a staggeringly high 97 per cent.
Growth movement
Many other academics have weighed into the defence of the Christian faith, the newspaper said. Brian Leiter, a professor of law and philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, noted, “It would be accurate to say that it's a growth movement.”
Christians, of course, do not need probability theory to convince them of the Resurrection. But this certainly is a good point to throw back at atheists and skeptics who say there is no chance that the Resurrection took place.
How can you believe the Bible if you can’t prove it’s true?
There is more evidence for the historicity of the New Testament than for the existence of Julius Caesar, yet no one doubts the facts surrounding Caesar. Early Christian writers did not dispute the Bible, and not one fact in it has been indisputably proved wrong.
How can you believe the Bible when you can't prove that it is true?
Well, how could you prove that there was a great fire in London in 1666? Or that Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo? Or that it was Michelangelo who painted the Sistine Chapel?
How can you even prove that what you read in today's newspaper or heard on the radio is true?
The fact is, we can't prove that one-off events down through history happened at all. Maybe the person who told us about the events was mistaken. Maybe he or she was inaccurate, or was hallucinating, or didn't have all the facts, or was simply a liar.
Even if we are eyewitnesses to something, it is difficult to prove to others that the information we are telling them is exactly the way it happened. The world's law courts and jails throb with stories of guilty people being acquitted and innocent people being convicted because one side was more persuasive than the other (and persuasive doesn't mean accurate). Sometimes the courts convict people wrongly (such as Australian beauty consultant Schapelle Corby in Indonesia), and sometimes the penalty is death.
We take things on trust
We take most things on trust because we believe the words of those who were there — eyewitnesses. Or we take the word of people who say they obtained the information from eyewitnesses.
No one doubts the existence of Julius Caesar, yet there is less evidence for his existence than for the historicity of the New Testament. There are probably 5000 manuscript copies of portions of the New Testament in Greek, and at least 15,000 more in other languages. Nothing like this abundance exists for any other historical writing.
It should be noted too that many of the early Christian writers quoted profusely from the New Testament. Some of these writers lived very close to the time that the books of the New Testament were written, and would surely have refuted them if there was doubt about their authenticity.
No one has refuted the Book of Acts
This is especially so regarding the many historical details in the Bible's Book of Acts. Specific places, people, and events are mentioned throughout this amazing historical account of the early church, and yet there is no record of anyone refuting anything in the book. The eyewitnesses seem totally reliable.
Even more interestingly, not one major fact mentioned in the Bible has been indisputably proved to be untrue. There are many thousands of highly qualified scientists who believe that the Bible's account of creation is more in harmony with true science than is the theory of evolution.
And there have been countless scholars — historians, archaeologists, theologians, and others — who have come to believe that those who wrote the Bible were truly writing the Word of God. And that the Word of God is true.

Our Lord saw very clearly into the nature of life as it is, the nature of reality.In the eyes of Jesus who saw things as they really were, the devil was a very real being. He realizes that, as human beings, we simply do not see the devil but what we see is the devil's front, which Jesus calls "the world."
Judas thought he could keep himself by his own efforts! He thought he could do it on his own. He thought he could follow Christ in his own strength and use him for his own ends. He never had made that inner surrender of the heart by which he recognized his utter weakness and cast himself on Christ.
He had never come to that. He had never come to the place where he cast himself in helpless weakness upon Christ as the other disciples had: "Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life" {John 6:68 KJV}. Peter said, "You are a disturbing man to live with. Other teachers make their appeal to us, but Lord, to whom can we go? No one else can do what you can do."
"He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." { John 14:12 KJV}
Jesus says: that the world hates his disciples because they are not of the world. The world in which we live is dominated by satanic philosophy, which is diametrically opposed to all that God stands for. We make a very serious mistake when we forget that fact and try to settle down in this world and become comfortable in it, as though this were the proper place, the atmosphere, the climate in which we ought to feel at home.
Perhaps the most effective propaganda of the world is the satanic lie that we call romanticism. There are millions fooled by it. I am sure there are many among us today who are deeply affected by this, though it is nothing more than a lie. Certainly many of our young people are profoundly influenced by this idea. It is the illusion that life is intended to be all moonlight and roses, swashbuckling adventure or breathtaking journeys to faraway places. Look over the nearest magazine stand and you will see what I mean. Nearly all the magazines make their appeal along the lines of romance, of body building, adventure, and health, or of travel or excitement. There is the world in all its silken delusion, luring, beckoning with soft music and dim lights and exotic names and places; that is the world. It is rather easy to lose one's head and to sell out for "the good life," which unfortunately is never discovered. It is a bitter irony of our day, perhaps more than in any other age, that by giving ourselves all that our dreams have envisaged, we find our lives are still empty and purposeless, without meaning. It is because it is all a dream, a fantasy, a web of deceit, promising much but delivering nothing.
The Christian answer to romanticism is in Verse 13:
"I am coming to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves." {John 17:13 RSV}
For, like a child, we do not always know what is wrong with us. Sometimes a child can only look at his mother with great, appealing eyes and cannot say what is wrong but his mother usually knows, for she takes hold at the right place. Like a father pitieth his children, the Scripture says, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him and cry out to him when they are in trouble, even though they may cry out about the wrong thing. Nevertheless, when we cry out a Father hears and a Father's strength moves to act on our behalf."
Someone asked a dear cleaning lady what her method of prayer was, and she said,
"I don't know nothin' about method. I just pray like this: When I wash my clothes, I pray, 'Lord, wash my heart clean.' When I iron them, I say, 'Lord, iron out all those troubles I can't do nothin' about.' When I sweep the floor, I say, 'Lord, sweep all the corners of my life like I'm sweepin' this floor.'"
No man is smart enough to do it on his own. Nothing else is sufficient, only the power of God can keep us. This is reflected throughout the Epistles of the New Testament. Paul said, "I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to keep" {2 Tim 1:12b KJV}, and it does not make any difference whether you translate the next phrase, "that which I have committed unto him," or "that which he has committed unto me.". Either translation is possible, but, in any case, God is able to keep. Peter speaks of those "who are kept," he says, "by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed at the last time," {1 Pet 1:5 KJV}. And almost the last promise of Scripture is that word of Jude's, "Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy," {cf, Jude 1:24 KJV}. Nothing else will suffice.
To highlight that, Jesus spotlights for us the one apparent exception. He says,
"I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled." {John 17:12 RSV}
